OCR (optical character recognition)

What is an OCR?

OCR (optical character recognition) converts text in images and scanned documents into machine-readable text. It is the first step of most document automation, followed by AI that understands which text belongs to which field.

Classic OCR reads characters but not meaning. Intelligent document processing adds layout understanding, field extraction and validation on top.

Accuracy depends on scan quality, fonts and handwriting, which is why validation and review steps matter.

Examples

  • Reading a scanned invoice
  • Digitising printed forms
  • Extracting text from photos of receipts
