AI agent

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is software that uses a large language model to pursue a goal on its own: it understands a request, decides which steps to take, uses tools such as calendars, CRMs or databases, and completes the task, asking a human when it is unsure.

Unlike a simple chatbot that only replies to messages, an AI agent can act. A booking agent, for example, checks availability, reserves a slot and sends a confirmation, all within one conversation.

Reliable business agents have a narrow, clearly defined job, guardrails that limit what they may do, logging of every action, and a hand-off path to a person.

Examples

  • A voice agent that books clinic appointments
  • A WhatsApp agent that qualifies property leads
  • An agent that reads invoices into accounting software
