IVR (interactive voice response)

What is an IVR?

IVR (interactive voice response) is a phone menu system that routes callers using keypad presses or simple voice commands ("press 1 for sales"). Unlike an AI voice agent, an IVR follows fixed menus and cannot hold a natural conversation or complete tasks on its own.

Many businesses replace or front their IVR with an AI voice agent so callers can simply say what they need.

AI voice agents can still route calls like an IVR, but they also answer questions and take actions.
