AI guardrails

What is an AI guardrails?

AI guardrails are the rules and checks that keep an AI system safe and on-task: limits on topics and actions, validation of outputs, protection of personal data, and automatic escalation to a person in defined situations.

Last reviewed · Dexorn Technologies

Guardrails can be instructions to the model, code that checks outputs before they're sent, permission limits on tools, or human approval steps.

They are essential for customer-facing agents and for any action that changes data or money.

Examples

  • Never quote prices not in the catalogue
  • Require approval before issuing refunds
  • Redact card numbers from transcripts
